Background on the Older Adult An older adult has arbitrarily been defined as a person who is 65 years of age or older. People are living longer and as a result our society has large percentage of older adults. It is estimated by 2030 that approximately 20% of the US population will be older adults. In older adults, all organ systems undergo some degree of decline in overall functioning, and the body becomes less efficient. There are normal physiologic changes in structure and function that are seen as a person ages. In caring for individuals across the lifespan, as the nurse we must be able to assess, understand, and address these changes. Part 1: Reflective Questions: Think about someone you know that is considered an older adult and answer the following questions (you may type in your answers or handwrite them, however remember the document will need to be uploaded in a word document for feedback). Have you noticed any age-related changes with your parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, or someone you know who is older? Identify the changes and what you/them have made to accommodate these changes or what actions you as a nurse might take to assist them with these changes?
