Community based health education is an intervention provided by the health care interdisciplinary team to the community to approach the importance of health characteristics within multiple groups. Community based health education focuses on diseases and sickness prevention, health promotion and well-being. Health quality and concepts are well explained to the individuals as this kind of education aids in the community’s development. Health education can also greatly and positively impact healthy behaviors among multiple groups in the community. The community-based health education resource that is selected for this week is the “Nutrition” program. Many individuals often encounter difficulties choosing which kind of aliments to purchase and trust when it comes to food, and other may struggle with having it available to them. However, despite of the several food availabilities, many individuals often end up being underfed or obese due to the lack of nutritional and diet education. Community based nutritional education is capable of explaining and answering these questions. There are several known community-based health and nutrition program available for the community. Many of these programs are prenatal care for pregnant women to provide nutrients and supplementation, women’s health and nutrition to provide nutrition and family health promotion. In addition, few of the largest nutrition assistance programs provided by the government are the Women, infants, and Children (WIC), Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP), National School Lunch Program (NSLP), Supplemental Nutrition Assistance (SNAP), Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP), School Breakfast Program (SBP), and the Emergency Food Access Program (Lee, Kinsey, & Kenney, 2022). These are nutrition programs resources that are available to the community in the prevention of undernourishment. This type of community-based health education is crucial as is directs the population in question to the right resources and aid in promote wellness. The single critique regarding these resources is specifically toward the Women, infants, and Children (WIC) program. Many of the recipients voice their concerns regarding the limitation of brand of food they are allowed to receive, and that there is a specific list of foods that are WIC approved. In addition, they show concerns regarding the limitation of grocery stores that accept the program. On a positive note, mainly all the major stores like Walmart, Publix, Kroger are part of the program. The nurse plays a major role as part of the interdisciplinary team when providing nutritional education and direction toward resources to the community (Amoey, Fakhari, & Farzin, 2017). The nutritionist and dietitian may be responsible for proper selection of food for the individuals as they are aware of the person’s nutritional status and intake. On the other hand, the nurse may screen the patient and provide referrals and recommendations regarding several resources that are available for the community. Moreover, the nurse is responsible for ensuring the patient’s nutritional needs are met and education is well understood with proper demonstrations.
