Clinical inquiry in evidence-based practice is being used to capture trending results that show how effective interventions are and if they are considered more effective than others. The clinical inquiry I have chosen targets the elderly diabetic population and how proper teaching and evidence-based interventions reduce the number of readmissions and complications of these patients. I plan on investigating this topic and determining if the appropriate education on diabetes can help to prevent readmission and additional complications of the disease. “Reducing readmission rates of diabetic patients has the potential to greatly reduce health care costs while simultaneously improving care.” “Risk factors for readmission in this population include lower socioeconomic status, racial/ethnic minority, comorbidity burden, public insurance, emergent or urgent admission, and a history of recent prior hospitalization,” (Rubin, 2015). My initial search on EBSCO for hospital readmission in diabetes resulted in 259 results. With every additional limitation I placed on the BOOLEAN operators, the number of results lessened. When I refined my search to all the proper categories, 127 articles appeared. I ensured the articles were written after 2012, all reports were peer-reviewed, and the entire piece was available. Another database that I used from the Walden Library is Google Scholar. My initial search landed about 19,000 results. When I refined the search results, the result was 235 articles. In this search, I wanted only reports from the last five years that had been peer-reviewed. From this database, I found an article written in 2020 that tracked the number of readmits and those that had severe complications of diabetes. “In this review, only one study was eligible to investigate the impact of IDE on mortality, which showed that patients with IDE had a lower mortality rate than those who did not receive it (0.9% vs. 1.42%)” (Hussain et al., 2018). To increase the rigor and effectiveness of my study, I can ensure all articles are peer-reviewed, well-written, and unbiased. I can also filter my research by years and type of study. The more specific I get in my research, the better I will be able to find an article that supports my PICO (T) statement. “Keep in mind the more narrow your topic and focus the research question, the less you will find published in a database or online. It is recommended that you begin with a broad search to determine what has been published on a specific patient population, medication, procedure, therapy, etc.,” (LibGuides, 2022) References: Hussain, Z., Alkharaiji, M., & Idris, I.
