Case studies Task 02 Case Study 1 Robyn is single, in her 40’s and has a mild intellectual disability. She is also slightly deaf. Robyn receives a disability pension and lives on her own in a Department of Housing facility. She has no family support but works in supported employment, a position she arranged for herself. She has presented to her GP because of severe dermatitis on her hands. It emerges that Robyn has obsessive thoughts about cleanliness and undertakes compulsive cleaning rituals involving the use of harsh detergents. Case Study 2 A woman of 28 years of age, lives with her husband in a shared supported accommodation house and works part-time. Her husband works full-time. Both of them have mild intellectual disability. Her husband is worried about her being overweight (70kg). Weight has increased 12kg in the past 5 years. Medication: Olanzapine 40 mg daily The woman is reasonably active walking 2-3 times weekly and tenpin bowling once weekly. Husband and wife shop together (husband has most understanding) Dietary history of woman: Three meals and three snacks Low intake of dairy foods and cereals Enjoys butter, biscuits, wants fried foods Limited cooking skills and nutrition knowledge, home help assists two hours weekly when she prepares meals in advance and freezes them. The woman has gradually become more and more sad about her weight and is constantly talking about how she does not like herself. She says that sometimes she can’t stop thinking about anything else. Case study 03 Rina has a mild intellectual disability. Mental illness arises from her very traumatic childhood in which she suffered sexual, emotional and physical abuse from her father and other male relatives. As an adult, Rina has been experiencing flashbacks, anxiety attacks and depression and her condition worsened significantly after the birth of her two children. She experienced significant separation anxiety whenever her children were out of sight. Rina’s children have moved away from home and she now lives in a shared house with one other person. The other person (Bill) has support workers visit him four times a week for three hours at a time and these may be male or female workers who assist with in home or out of home activities. Rina is now having trouble at work: – remembering work procedures – understanding and carrying out simple work instructions – maintaining attention and concentration for greater than 2 hours – maintaining attendance and presentation at her job – asking simple questions or requesting assistance from a co-worker or supervisor – interacting appropriately with the general public, supervisors and co-workers – handling the normal stress of a workday CASE STUDY 1 (see case study below) 1.
