You have accepted a newly created school nurse position at a local high school with grades 7-12.  This high school is the result of two communities who have merged their local school systems two years ago and currently have 60-70 students in each grade. 

1. How would you begin your community assessment of the high school to identify the needs?  What model might you use to assist in the community assessment?

2. After your community assessment of the high school and review of survey results, you prioritized needs of the students, teachers, and parents.  One of the reoccurring themes from all three groups included sexual activity- students voiced peer pressure, teachers voiced concerns that students were talking about what they believed to be STD symptoms, and parents were concerned with a current junior and senior who were pregnant and felt they should be placed in an alternative school.  As the school nurse, what interventions and education would you provide to each group to address all concerns brought forward? 

3. Who are the stakeholders involved with implementing the desired interventions/education for all three identified groups?

4. Who will you, as the school nurse, need to collaborate with to ensure the interventions/education are effective for all three identified groups?

5. How would you evaluate the effectiveness of your interventions/education for all three identified groups?

6. The Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS) identified your state with a significant uptick of e-cigarette use over the past 3 years. The CDC has provided grant funding for interventions targeting youth within specific school districts and calls for the school nurse to form a team to implement interventions.
