Congenital heart disease is a condition in which one or more structural issues in the heart have existed since birth. The term “congenital” refers to a condition that is present from birth. Congenital heart disease can affect the way blood flows through the heart in both adults and children.

Etiology: Environmental and genetic are the risk factors for CHD

Genetics: genetic conditions that a baby might inherit from on or both of the parents are down syndrome, turner syndrome, noonan syndrome 
Diabetes: women with diabetes are at high risk of giving birth a baby with CHD
Medications: such as anti seizure or ibuprofen : if ibuprofen is taken when a women is pregnant 30 or more weeks it could lead to CHD
Alcohol: pregnant women who drink too much alcohol during pregnancy can cause atrial or ventricular septal defects 
Smoking 
Flu ( influenza) 

Modifiable factors: 

Smoking: quit smoking if you are smoker  
Alcohol: don’t drink alcohol while pregnant 
Medications: be careful of meditation you take
