Discussion Responses should be approximately 5-7 sentences and should offer a constructive comment, a different point of view, or an additional idea for educational support for Mia and her family. Remember to include in-text citations and references in the peer response. Question 1- What are the social determinant risks and protective factors applicable to Mia and her family? one major social detriment risk factor we can get from Mia and her family is poverty, lack of education and limited resources. Poverty can have one of the most significant impact on an individuals health and guarantee for future health insurance and well-being overall. Mia’s mother begins to explain that because she did not finish Highschool and receive her diploma, it was difficult finding a job with higher income. Katrina also mentions that she lives paycheck to paycheck. Poor oral health can be seen more prevalent on individuals and families who are impoverished. Many without healthcare are seen to be prone to oral health problems, chronic diseases, mental health problems and other major health issues without healthcare. Additionally, these health problems very quickly become difficult to maintain financially. Another significant social factor of health is access to child care. People without access to child care are more likely to have a wide range of health issues; such as dental health, chronic diseases and mental health issues. Additionally, they have a higher chance of dying earlier than people with child care. Protective factors: A key barrier against the effects of social detriments of health is social support. People with social support are more likely to experience better Physical and mental health results than people without it. Another important barrier to the effects of socioeconomic detriments of health is resilience. People who have access to community resources are more likely to experience improved physical and mental health outcomes compared to those who don’t. Question 2 – What additional information would you want to know about Mia and her family? After hearing Katrina’s monologue, I would be curious to learn more about the community’s resources and attitudes towards health and well-being. Having a just and good support system with the community and individuals Katrina and her family surrounds herself with may benefit her and her daughter greatly, opening new opportunities and even additional luxuries that she was not able to achieve before. I’d be interested to know if there are any local services. assistances or medical care offered in the neighborhood. Having these support groups, local assistance and networks might help Katrina and her family for minor yet important health problems and will benefit her greatly. Question 3 – What were the key areas for potential educational support for Mia and her family? Some major key areas for potential educational support for Mia and her family is Katrina returning to Highschool to receive her diploma and allow herself to get a job with higher income and financial stability. In Katrina’s monologue, she mentions that her and her husband live paycheck to paycheck — raising worries when Mia is needed at a clinic or for medical attention. Katrina’s monologue also mentions that Katrina’s husband encourages her to finish Highschool and live to her full educational potential before Mia returns to school as a young child, and may soon be influenced by her peers, etc. A higher source of education for many jobs, especially high paying jobs with guaranteed financial security. Question 4 – To address this key area, what educational material would you give Mia and her mother? I would absolutely advice Mia and her mother to introduce themselves to any local services, medical aid and/or medical assistance that may help them for future reference. Health issues, major or minor should be attended to and assisted in as soon as possible. Introducing yourself to local community services and acknowledging the support systems around you can allow a person to take advantage of it in the best way possible. Additionally, Katrina working for a system of insurance (i.e child care, dental care, etc) prior to Mia returning to school, where she is more exposed to risks, will definitely benefit her in the future. Patients with expanded healthcare such as child care, dental care and more are more likely to be provided for in medical terms and are more likely to live a healthy, longer and more flourishing life, as compared to those who do not.
