I think we have to be weary when comparing healthcare systems because as we know Canada and Great Britain have different training as well as an overall different pay scheme for the consumers of the healthcare. In the United States I think we are addressing this gap in generalist by increasing NP programs that qualify nurses to take over in this gap as NP’s.  The data says that “by 2025 [nurse practitioners] will constitute 41% of the primary care practitioner workforce.” As an aspiring physician in the United States there is more financial incentive to specialise, so I would create legislation that redirects the incentive to bring them into this field—perhaps loan repayment schedules. Regardless of the physician shortage, the rise in NPs in this field I think is appropriate as NPs were trained as nurses and have the framework of patient centered care which is a corner stone to primary care practice. Despite the number of NPs coming into the field, I think there should still be legislation that addresses the inequity of which kinds of nurses can afford to take this side step in their careers, there should be more hospital based programming that allows nurses to do their clinical requirements at their jobs and funding available for them to consider advancing their practice.
