For this question, it depends on why
For this question, it depends on why I am uncomfortable with the patients that I am assigned to. I will have to explore that reason first. If I feel that it is unsafe for either me or the patient, then I believe I have the right to refuse such assignment with a legitimate reason. For example, if I have only worked on a med-surg floor and there is a critically ill patient who is waiting to be transferred and needs to be taken care of now, I would be uncomfortable taking care of that patient because I do not have such experience, especially when there is another nurse who has experience in this field. Working in the dark may harm the patient in ways that I am not even aware of. However, I would need to let the charge nurse knows my reasons and work together with them for a new assignment. I should not refuse assignments for reasons other than safety (such as personal convenience or discrimination). It is important for us to know what our scope of practice and boundary lie. We should never cross outside of them even though we’re being assigned to do so at our working environment. If negotiation with the charge nurse fails, then I could invoke the Safe Harbor.
