Some of the outcomes include cardiovascular disease, cancer, depression, and even death. However, the consequences typically are not substantial enough for people to quit. The COVID-19 pandemic caused a recent increase in the number of people who use drugs or alcohol as a way to manage their stress. It is important to acknowledge the correlation between a worldwide disaster, like the COVID-19 pandemic, and the ways people manage the pressure in their lives. Research on said topic consisted of identifying the issue and taking a holistic approach in finding a solution. Some of the key findings depended heavily on socioeconomic status and ethnic differences. In order to provide a solution to the issue of addiction, it is important to educate people on how the disorder changes the body physiologically, as well as, educating on the cultural differences among certain populations. Introduction Substance use disorders during the pandemic were exacerbated; the decrease in resources left people feeling helpless. The restrictions hindered mental health resources while also creating a new group of people who did not necessarily put themselves on the spectrum of substance abuse disorders, but rather increased their substance usage. Across several studies, these people significantly increased their alcohol/substance consumption as a result of stress management. The countries/areas that are most affected by addiction tend to be poorer countries and areas of poverty. Areas, where people receive a lower income, have also been shown to be affected by addiction. Sometimes, that is not always the case. On media platforms, numerous celebrities and people of high profile tend to have addiction problems. Either way, people in poorer environments are most affected by addiction. The recent COVID-19 pandemic caused a nationwide closure of mental health resources, in turn affecting individuals seeking help. A law pertaining to addiction is the Affordable Care Act (ACA), which aims to make healthcare more affordable for those with low income. It is unfortunate that people of high profile/celebrities tend to have better access to the resources, while low-income individuals struggle in the same resulting in fewer people getting help. Educating the public in regards to addiction is important but one aspect that is getting neglected is the reason why there are typically more cases of addiction in the United States. Medicine in America primarily acting as a monetary system is another aspect being analyzed. The cultural and ethical scholarly articles in this research will evaluate the pandemic-related restrictions that caused substance abuse disorders to spike. It will also cover healthcare in the U.S. in comparison to other countries where addiction is not so prevalent. Conclusion In conclusion, many argue that the approach to solving addiction in the U.S. is clearly untenable. The spectrum of addiction can be broad and not necessarily black and white. Healthcare in the U.S. seems to be primarily monetary and addiction can occur in greater numbers among communities in poverty. Education on said subjects is crucial for the comprehension of why these cultures are most affected by this issue. Typically money will dictate power and financial gain seems to be more valuable than the treatment and rehabilitation of people who suffer from addiction. Should I conclude by addressing both addiction and the recent rise in alcohol consumption during the pandemic?
