I’m sure that when many of us think of Florence Nightingale, we think of the image of a benevolent figure holding her glowing lamp and attending to unfortunate souls in the darkness. That image of true kindness resonates with me, and was part of why I wanted to work in a caring field. While not a historical figure, a nurse that had a huge impact on me was my final mentor during my final semester, Joanne. I remember being overwhelmed at that time, I had my own patients and felt completely unprepared; I just didn’t have the self-belief that I was capable. I was struggling and Joanne saw how frazzled I was. She never seemed to be flustered and she asked me what was wrong. I told her I had about twelve things to do, and I didn’t even know where to begin. She took me to a quiet space and told me to take a deep breath. Then she told me that I can only do one thing at a time so I need to decide what is most important, do that first and then continue through my list of things to do in this manner. While it sounds so simple, no one had ever explained things to me in this way and something just clicked. Over a decade later and oceans apart, I am still friends with Joanne and I continue to aspire to be as good a nurse as she is.
