I will be working to educate nursing students, bedside staff, and patients as we shift to use of the Bladder Management Protocol. The Bladder Management Protocol directs that external catheter devices and/or intermittent straight catheterization are exhausted before indwelling catheterization is done. Catheter associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) claim the lives of at least 13,000 patients annually nationwide and place as many as one in four hospitalized patients at risk for increased discomfort, increased mortality, longer lengths of stay, and higher health-care related costs (Ferguson, 2018). To convey the associated risks to patients and educate healthcare providers and patients alike, educators must use an active process to determine what the learners’ needs are and how best to meet them. Driven by these points, behavioral or learner objectives can be developed and signify what the learner should be able to achieve following an educational activity (Bastable, 2019). Unlike a goal which is a final learning outcome, Bastable (2019) describes an objective as a short, concrete, specific outcome that can be achieved directly following the learner activity.
