John Smith is an active 60 year

John Smith is an active 60 year old admitted for a ruptured left achilles tendon which required surgical repair. He developed a complication of a deep vein thrombosis (blod clot) in the left leg. He has never been hospitalized before and is anxious. The post operative instructions include the use of crutches, which he has never used before, and no weight-bearing on the left leg for 4 weeks. He currently has an intravenous infusing with heparin therapy for anticoagulation (blood thinner) to prevent the clot from getting bigger and other clots from forming. John is still receiving oral pain medication as needed for post operative pain that is complicated by the blood clot. Other then using a bedside commode he is on complete bed rest until cleared by physical therapy for safe crutch use.
