Min is a 67 year old Chinese Canadian woman who resides with her husband Kim in a condominium in Unionville. Min and her husband have been married for 47 years and have raised a son and a daughter; both are married. Their son lives in British Columbia and their daughter lives in Markham. The couple is on a fixed pension income. Min is a retired school teacher and Kim recently retired from the police force. They were active in their local church until about 2 years ago when Min began exhibiting disturbing behaviors that made it difficult for Kim to take her into social settings. Min was recently diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. She also has a history of a cerebrovascular accident that left her with mild right-sided weakness 6 years ago. Other than this, she was relatively healthy until about 4 years ago when her husband began to notice that she was becoming forgetful. For a while, Min was able to mask her forgetfulness by using calendars and Post-it notes, but it became apparent that her memory loss was impacting her ability to function on a day-to-day basis. Kim took over the household chores and cooking. Their daughter has been helping with some chores and care giving for her mother, but she is due to have her first baby next month and her doctor has advised her to limit her activity. Min’s diagnosis has been difficult for her husband. Kim is supportive of his wife and becomes tearful when he thinks about how life used to be. Last week his wife did not recognize him, which was particularly traumatic for him. Although there is a home care nurse that visits every other day, he is having difficulty caring for the client because she has recently become incontinent of urine and verbally aggressive, sometimes striking at him. Kim quietly confesses that sometimes he feels like striking back. Kim no longer takes Min anywhere because he fears she will embarrass him. He is unable to leave her alone in the house because he is afraid that she will wander outside and become lost. She wakes him throughout the night, which adds to his fatigue. Kim is reluctant to talk about his frustration with the situation
