Nurses need representation on both a state and national level. Nurses in political roles can make a great impact on the lives of others. Erin Murphy is a five-term state representative of Minnesota. According to the article, the first item Murphy backed at the MNA was the passage of Minnesota Care, a health insurance program for low-and middle-income workers who are unable to purchase private insurance (Szulecki,2017). Murphy struggled getting this passed, however she continued to look out for the betterment of the people. According to the article, she helped reform Minnesota health care by creating a Health Care Home initiative (Szulecki,2017). This allows more available and affordable care for people without having to leave their homes. This was a very progressive and still is a progressive leadership creation.
According to the article, Murphy wants fellow nurses to know that they are needed in government (Szulecki,2017). Nursing brings fundamental skills such as listening and problem solving into politics. Both skills are needed when helping others and gathering what is truly needed in lives and communities. Another article states, as a profession nursing has a long history of engaging in advocacy to strengthen and advance the profession, patient care and outcomes, health systems and public policy (Chiu, et.al.,2021). Erin Murphy understood the struggles of being from a middle-income family, and she provides a great example through her desire to serve and help those in need. If more nurses pursued the avenues of politics, great strides could be made in the overall field of healthcare.
