Reply to this discussion post The situation involving this woman is quite complex and there are two different groups that look at this situation in different ways. First the healthcare staff who have knowledge in areas such as cancer, septic shock, and other conditions that are associated with ICU patients. Then there is the family who doesn’t care about the odds, buts wants their loved one to live on and continue to experience life. An ethics committee can help in settling this division. Hajibabaee et al. (2016) explains that within clinical practice ethical issues are bound to occur and ethic committees should be utilized to navigate through these ethical challenges. I believe that a strong influencer in the ethical committee should be the nurses caring for this woman. Dewey (2019) explains the importance of nurses on ethic committees stating that they can advocate for their patients the best related to them being with the patient the most and knowing them better than most members on the healthcare team. This can be especially helpful if there is a recurrent nurse that has cared for this woman on previous admissions. If this were my patient, I would really consider the fact that she has already decided to be placed in hospice care. Hospice is defined as “a subset of palliative care, provides expert medical care, pain management, emotional and spiritual support to patients with terminal illnesses with a prognosis of 6 months or less to live” (De Campos & Walsh, 2021, p. 365). This was a decision that the patient had already made when they were of sound mind. When contacting the family, I would present the patients previous desire to be placed in hospice as well as her current medical condition. In the end the patient’s loved ones have the end say in the care the patient should or should not receive. I believe that the ethics committee can provide great guidance for the family educating them in making the best decision.
