Respond to: The more I am exposed

Respond to: The more I am exposed to the nursing and surrounding professions, the more I am faced with the importance of informatics to the profession. Every single day, in clinical and not, we are surrounded by aspects of informatics that make our lives so much easier. This resource has come infallible to the nursing role. From using it for keeping track of your patient assignments, to using it to avoid over dosing or exposing patients to possibly harmful substances, the Electronic Charting Systems are for sure a valuable tool to the care team. One way I see the electronic health record changing in the future is the universal use of one system for all charting. I think this would be beneficial because everyone would be trained on it, which means the quality of the charts will increase. Another benefit to having a universal charting system is that the need for looking through multiple databases will no longer be present, which will make continuity of care more feasible. One thing I can think about that could possibly go wrong with having a universal charting system is the accessibility to unlimited patient information, all in one place. This aspect would make it easier for a maleficent person to access all of the patients information with no barriers. Privacy has always been a concern with any patient information, and electronic charts are not the exception whether they’re electronic or part of a universal database. I believe the sensitivity of the information being handled in the medical care facilities should be guarded by surveillance/authentication processes, like the ones we have now and I’m sure will continue to use for a while.
