Respond to the statement : Informatics and technology are being incorporated more and more every passing day into the field of nursing. Technology allows for patient care to be faster, more convenient, and accurate. We most commonly think of the EHR as our main technological advancement, but the Pyxis is a true cherish-able ally. The Pyxis is an “automated” medication dispenser. From personal experience, the nurse must first use her finger print to log into the machine. From there, she has access to her patients and any orders that are in from the provider. The nurse then chooses a patient, what med(s) she is pulling, then clicks “submit”. From there the appropriate drawer will flash with a green light, the nurse then opens that drawer, and the proper compartment opens up for the correct med. The nurse then confirms on the Pyxis she got the correct medication and dose. This system has easily cut down the time it takes to get meds by half or even over half. The machine is not fool proof, however. There still is the possibility it was stocked incorrectly, or there is a computer malfunction. That is why the nurse should do her three checks regardless of any technology. In the future, I see it changing by possibly having a different method of stocking inventory. The pharmacy still has to come to the floor and department and manually fill the machine. In the future, maybe there will be a more direct access from the pharmacy to the Pyxis. Ethical issues that can be concerning are people put too much trust into technology. As I stated before, it is not fool proof. The machine may open the wrong drawer, or it may be stocked incorrectly. If a nurse does not do her checks, or overrides any flags, that could lead to harm to the patient’s. There also is the concern of reliability there will be electricity in the hospital. Despite the machine not being 100% fool proof, it is still a huge advancement in nursing care.
