Scenario 1 The Tasmanian school where you work as an Enrolled Nurse is starting a new Health Promotion program with a specific aim of involving more Aboriginal families from the local community. The staff have met with local Aboriginal community members to find out about specific cultural protocols and sensitivities, as well as factors that will contribute to a successful program. They have developed a flyer to advertise the program and have emailed this to the local Aboriginal centre. The room has been set up and includes the following: A welcome sign acknowledging the traditional owners of the land. The Australian flag. Colourful pictures depicting local Aboriginal people. Local flora and fauna. Hands-on activities such as: A numeracy station with plastic counters, gumnuts and shells. Ochre from the local area for face-painting Dot painting Didgeridoos When people start to arrive for the first session, they are met at the door by the Health Centre Coordinator who asks them to sit on chairs that are set up facing the front for a meeting. The coordinator wants to find out what the participants hope to get out of the program. They stand at the front of the room and read from a pre-prepared document using formal English to ask questions to specific individuals. As the informal part of the program begins, the centre staff are concerned that only a few families have shown up considering the large number of Aboriginal people in the local community. An hour later three more families arrive. The coordinator tells them politely that they are too late for today’s session, so they’ll need to leave, but they are welcome to return next week at 10am sharp. At the conclusion of the session, the coordinator informally chats with the participants to try and find out why more people didn’t attend and why some turned up late. Use the following table to evaluate the cultural safety of this program. Include specific examples from the description of the program. One example is provided for you in the first row, this does not count as one of your responses. In your responses take into consideration any legislative requirements.
