Politics and the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act

In any democratic society, legislators pass bills that impact society at large. However, when passing these bills, they have to keep the masses in mind since the masses elect them (Laureate Education, 2018).  In the United States, if legislation does not have the support of the public, a legislator would shy from supporting it since they would be looking at their path away from the Legislature (Milstead & Short, 2019). An example is the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. The Republicans had vowed to repeal and replace the bill. However, the primary reason their bill came to a halt in 2016 was the support that the bill was enjoying across the nation.  According to Béland et al. (2018), nearly 20 million people were benefiting from this. Going ahead with the plans would have meant losing the support of these people.  Some republicans saw sense in losing their support base and decided to vote against the repeal.

Whenever legislation is made, many individuals stand a chance to benefit from it.  Many times, the politicians fight against policies to show political might. For instance, in the case of ACA, the Republicans were fighting the bill since they hated the Democrats and not that they had any good agenda for the people. For instance, if they had gone ahead with their plan, more than 20 million Americans who cannot afford healthcare would have gone back to how it was before 2010 when healthcare was extremely expensive (Scott & Kliff, 2017). Moreover, politicians are bankrolled with business people who often require favors after the politician is elected.  For example, it had been rumored that private insurers were supporting the Republican’s quest to have the ACA repealed (Scott & Kliff, 2017). However, we have to give credit that at times, the needs of the masses triumph, such as when the repeal failed to gather the majority votes.
