SCENARIO 1 – DECLAN

Declan is 27 and has ‘severe’ (level 3) autism. He is non-verbal and often easily over stimulated and then withdraws from others. He can become overexcited suddenly running around and has injured himself and others. He is great at drawing and painting and this can engage him for hours. He often flaps his arms in a repetitive action mostly when he wants something. He is taking medication as prescribed but is not always cooperative to do so.

You notice a new worker David is struggling to communicate with Declan as he has stopped using his communication board. You observe from a distance when David is unaware and you notice David is being very abrupt with Declan. Instead of finding a way to confirm what Declan wants, David just goes ahead and makes decisions for Declan. Declan seems to be get more frustrated and you realise you should intervene before things escalate.
