Dr. Michael McGee was vice chairman of the department of surgery and principal researcher at The University of Oklahoma. In the year 2000, he developed a melanoma vaccine for which he enrolled 100 patients with advanced melanoma in the study of his vaccine. He misrepresented the study from the beginning by enrolling study participants on the claim that the vaccine may shrink the size of the patients’ tumor, when it was to test the toxicity and side effects of the vaccine. Of the 94 study participants injected, 26 patients died. Most of the deaths were attributed to melanoma and not the vaccine. When the federal Office for Human Research Protections shut down Dr. McGee’s studies, in March of 2000, researchers failed to reveal the vaccine safety problems and reason for the investigational shutdown to patients. They also failed to report safety issues to the institutional review board, a federal requirement. Dr. McGee was removed from his position at the University of Oklahoma
