A patient is showing signs of hyponatremia, her serum sodium is 129 mEq/mL. She is becoming confused, headache, nausea and vomiting. The physician orders 1 L of o.9% NaCl at 100mml/h for the next 24 hours period. The family is concerned over this. They ask how could this happen to her. You notice on her medication list she is on diuretics. The family states she hasn’t been drinking much water lately due to the chemo treatment. What is causing the hyponatremia? How would you address this issue with the family?
