As a member of a quality improvement committee team at the hospital, I will be present a nurse issue on the following topic: The importance of turning patients that are bedrest to prevent pressure ulcers.
While pressure ulcers are preventable, patients that are bed rest must be repositioned every two hours in an effort to prevent pressure ulcers. A pressure ulcer also known as a bedsore occurs when there is prolonged pressure on the skin. Pressure ulcers typically occur on or near bonny premises near the ankle, heel, tailbones and hip (Mayo Clinic, 2022). When patients that are bedrest due to an illness, surgery or complication are not turned every two hours, taking the pressure off bony premises pressure ulcers can form. Depending upon the floor and department, CNA’s or the registered nurse is responsible for turning the patient every two hours and documenting the repositioning when charting.
I propose the following to action to take place in an effort to avoid patients getting pressure ulcers:
Each Floor will hire CNA’s or patients care tech to only turn patients every 2 hours. In addition to charting when they turn the patient, this would be their only responsibility to limit pressure ulcers developing .
