when I was working in the ICU and a patient was having trouble getting pain medication. The patient was in a lot of pain and was asking for more medication, but the doctor was hesitant to give it to him because he was worried about the patient becoming addicted. I spoke to the doctor and explained that the patient was in a lot of pain and that we needed to do something to help him. I suggested that we give the patient a lower dose of the medication and increase it if needed. The doctor agreed and the patient was able to get the pain medication that he needed.
