Respond by either supporting or respectfully challenging their explanation on whether there is an evidence base to support the proposed health policy they described.

Healthcare policy is an integral aspect of the U.S. healthcare system—one that helps shape and protect the health and well-being of our population (UNIVERSITY OF ST. AUGUSTINE, 2021). Healthcare policy is critical in that it affects population health, healthcare providers, and facilities providing services or care. My policy of interest is to reduce the proportion of people who can’t get prescription medicines when needed. S.2257 – Expanding Access to Affordable Prescription Drugs and Medical Devices Act (Rosen, 2021).

When medicine is not available diseases may worsen or even cause death. Evidence shows that the most effective approaches for reducing delays and difficulty in getting prescription medicines involve addressing financial barriers and increasing insurance coverage (Reduce the Proportion of People Who Can’t Get Prescription Medicines When They Need Them — AHS‑06 – Healthy People 2030 | Health.gov, n.d.). According to Why People Aren’t Taking Their Prescription Medications (2016), “There are several competing demands,” Sharkey said, rent is due, there are utilities to be paid to keep the lights on, and food so the kids don’t go hungry—all these other obligations can get in the way of being able to buy medications. Lawmakers must be involved in policies and regulations to improve population health both locally and nationwide.

‌ This non-adherence leads to hospitalizations when chronic conditions flare up, and these hospitalizations cost the health care system between $100 billion and $289 billion each year (Why People Aren’t Taking Their Prescription Medications, 2016). ). People who cannot afford the basic needs may decide to do without medications to provide for their families like the elderly with budgeted income, families with kids, and minorities. An affordable medication program would eliminate such disparities and improve quality of life. According to Why People Aren’t Taking Their Prescription Medications, “What we see in South Texas is that resources ebb and flow,” said Sharkey, who is also the founding director of the Program for Research and Outreach-Engagement on Nutrition and Health Disparities Solutions. “Some months people can buy medications, and other months other bills need to be paid or they haven’t gotten much work, and medications fall by the wayside.”
