The theory of planned behavior (TPB) looks at an individual’s attitudes and beliefs to help explain health behaviors. Behavior can be predicted by a person’s attitude. In this case of teens who text while driving, I believe that the TPB model fits best. Within this theory explains subjective norms. This is defined by “the belief that an important person or group of people will approve and support particular behavior. It is based on social pressure to behave in a certain way, and how they comply with those people’s views. Intentions are heavily influenced by personal factors. Teens who text while driving can be pressured into these social norms. Their actions can be based on others and how they think of the situation. Texting and driving is done by many people, even though it is not safe and illegal in some states. Teens might base their behaviors on what they see- if they see their friends or family doing it, they will think it’s okay. The theory of planned behavior fits best with this topic.
