One culture that differs greatly from my own is the Indian culture. In order to effectively treat a patient from this culture, I would have to make various changes to the way I deliver my healthcare services. Firstly, I would need to modify my communication approach by utilizing a translator in the case that the patient does not speak fluent English. Once a reliable communication system has been established, it is important to speak to the patient in a culturally sensitive manner, so as to not upset the patient/provider relationship (Andrews & Boyle, 2002). Doing this enables me as the healthcare provider to better recognize and understand the cultural needs of my patient. In a similar way, maintaining a culturally understanding attitude is imperative while carrying out any kind of nursing task with a patient from another culture (Leininger, 1999). This can include modifying a treatment plan to ensure that a patient is not offended by any procedures. Respecting the cultural beliefs of the patient helps to improve the quality of care that they receive as it allows me to meet more of their personal and medical demands. Finally, I would have to modify my patient education system by delivering necessary information in a way that is easily accessible for my patient. Presenting health information in a simple format helps the patient to better understand their health condition and may assist in improving the effectiveness of their treatment (Andrews & Boyle, 2002).
