Elevate enzymes in the liver often indicate inflammation or there is damage to the cells.  The inflamed or injured liver cells will leak higher amounts of certain chemicals.  These enzymes can go into the bloodstream and this can easily be checked with a blood test.  Most common enzymes can be found in Gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT), Alkaline phosphatase (ALP), Aspartate transaminase (AST), and Alanine transaminase (ALT).  These are found in your most routine blood testing.  These high levels also do not always mean that there is no serious or chronic liver problem.
Gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase is an enzyme that is found in the liver.  Once these enzymes leak into the bloodstream at high levels is a sign of liver disease or damage to the bile ducts.  But the test can not diagnose the specific cause of the disease, but it is used to help diagnose bone disorders with Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP).  The test GTP is most often used to help diagnose liver disease, figure out if liver damage is due to liver disease or a bone disorder, check for blockage in the bile ducts, and screen for or monitor alcohol use disorder.  The test can also be used if there is an abnormal result on an ALP test and/or other liver function tests.  If the GGT shows a higher than normal level it may be a sign of liver damage.  The damage may be Hepatitis, cirrhosis, alcohol use disorder, Pancreatitis, Diabetes, Congestive heart failure, or a side effect of a drug.  There are certain medicines that can cause liver damage in some people.
