Student Statement: The selected article is titled “‘Reduction in the numbers of drugs administered to elderly inpatients with polypharmacy by a multidisciplinary review of medication using electronic medical records,” which involved a retrospective study of 432 seniors between 2004 and 2011 (Hayashi et al., 2017). The paper aimed to identify whether a multidisciplinary medication review using electronic medical records can help reduce polypharmacy in older patients. Data from various patients were gathered using electronic medical records. The study results showed Multidisciplinary medication review using electronic medical records significantly reduced the number of drugs taken by elderly inpatients receiving polypharmacy (Hayashi et al., 2017). This study used a significant sample size and a valid and reliable study methodology. However, it is a single-site study, compromising the generalizability of the findings.

Clinical and medical reviews can reduce polypharmacy amongst the elderly population because clinical medication reviews (CMS) effectively reduce potentially inappropriate and unnecessary medications, patient-centered approach deters unnecessary medication.
