Initially, I was overwhelmed by the many resources available for preparing for the ANCC boards. Next, I had to assess my learning style, so the top three I will utilize are Sarah Michelle’s Comprehensive board review, Leik review book, and good old YouTube. Having watched the Sarah Michelle videos, I like their concise content without all the extra things that may overburden you. My next step has been to read the Liek textbook, which is considered the holy grail not just for the FNP board but also for the AGNP board by nurses on YouTube and other social media platforms. My favorite is YouTube because it is free, and I can watch various videos about any topic I encounter, like murmurs. Both the Sarah Michelle question bank and the Leik textbook come with a code for an online version that contains practice questions. A few resources and sample questions are available on the ANCC website.
An NPI number and DEA number are required for nurse practitioners. “An NPI is a unique identifier for covered health care providers” (CMS, 2021). Also, NPIs can be used in various ways, such as identifying clinicians on prescriptions, linking proprietary provider identification numbers to other data, coordinating benefits across health plans, inpatient medical record systems, and program integrity files (AAFP, 2022). The NP must also have a DEA number to prescribe medications. I believe the most important items to review are the Nursing Practice Act and the Nursing Scope of Practice to fully prepare for practice. There are many aspects of the contract material that I want to know about. I plan to review the DEA, NPI, Immunization Registry, death certificate authority, and DOT or DMV physicals.
