Hi everyone, I am Raymart Caysido, a student from Centennial College.

Today, I am going to talk to you about the reality of where clothes go after donation.

I know for sure that we shop clothes every now and then based on the season and style. But have you ever thought of selling or donating your unused clothes? It may seem economically and environmentally friendly to have ideas of donating them with the thought of saving the Earth, right? But that is not the reality. The truth is, as we keep shopping for clothes, the cycle continues.

You may ask me what cycle I am talking about. Here is the example. According to Bryan Taylor, author of Nylon magazine, only 15% of donated clothes end up in charities and thrift stores. They will then sort these clothes base on quality and style. Majority of worn clothes will be dumped in landfills or sent to East African countries like Kenya and Ghana.

In Kenya, people profit from these tons of clothes sent to them. They sell these clothes as their major source of income. Sadly, recent donations are cheaply made and torn ones. A video of Business Insider featured a city in Ghana, wherein one of the vendors said she has no choice but to throw these torn clothes in the landfills. But these clothes’ destination is on the roads and beaches, causing flood and pollution.

This textile industry pollution is not well-addressed through mainstream media. What we can do is to stop buying cheap clothing materials that are also called “fast fashion”. We should start patronizing sustainable clothes that last for years and are quality made.

Now that you are aware where donated clothes go, be more responsible. We should always think twice when we do clothes shopping. As our planet is at stake through our careless acts.
