Today we saw the 2016 documentary “Risky Drinking.” This film takes a case-study approach to the risks of alcohol use and how the medical community views and treats “risky drinkers.” These four profiles show the different spectrums of problem drinking. The NIAAA defines binge drinking as “a pattern of drinking that brings alcohol concentration levels to 0.08 g/dl.” This typically occurs after four drinks for a woman and five drinks for a man -in a two-hour period.
What were some of the consequences of binge drinking that the film shows, and how does their drinking impact the quality of their life?
If you were on the spectrum of risky drinking and wanted to limit your alcohol consumption, which do you think would be more effective for you- moderation or abstinence? Why?
What were some of the examples that drinking had on the person’s family members?
According to the film, 80% of people with an alcohol abuse disorder will relapse within the first year of sobriety. Did that statistic surprise you?
An expert in the field of alcohol rehabilitation stated, “When treatment is given, it’s given in short bursts. A week of detox, a one-month rehab, you’d never treat diabetes like that. You’d never take a diabetic, give them three days or one month of treatment, and assume that they’re okay. This is like any other chronic illness. It requires a long-term solution.” How do you feel about this statement?
Is the health care community minimizing the seriousness of this condition and its treatment? Many insurance policies state they cover 30 days of inpatient treatment, but” no one gets all 30 days covered” says A. Thomas McLellan, CEO of the Treatment Research Institute (located in Philadelphia!). “The average days of the stay covered under insurance are currently between 11-14 days of those 30 days”. Average out-of-patient treatment costs start at $1000/monthly, 30-day inpatient program stay–without detox services- is expected to cost $30,000( if medical detox is necessary- the cost is between $3000-$5000 per day). What does this say about how society views people with an alcohol abuse disorder?
Have we made it financially impossible for people to get help?
What is your interpretation of this quote, and how would you use this philosophy in planning treatment for a patient or would you?-“People don’t drink because they’re crazy; they drink because it works in some way.” – Carrie Wilkens, Ph.D.
