Pain Management, Basic cares and Comfort
Â
After meeting the needs for oxygenation there are many cares and comfort needs that could be considered a priority. The one that stands out the most to me would be pain management. With proper pain management an individual may have a better outcome when it comes to recovery from surgeries or injuries and management of chronic or acute conditions. With better control of pain an individual would experience a better sense of well-being by being able to function better physically and in personal and professional relationships. In turn this decreases the potential for a negative outcome of poor healing, depression, and anxiety. With proper pain management after a procedure or injury, an individual can have better mobility and range of motion making it easier for the individual to accomplish daily tasks and prevent possible life altering complications such as pneumonia and blood clots. With pain management and the increased ability of movement, wounds tend to heal faster as well. This is due to the increase in blood circulation and perfusion. (Health, 2021) Changes in an individual’s health status may contribute to an increase in pain making daily activities difficult. Examples of this would consist of flair ups from underlying conditions or the development of new ones. Such conditions can consist of but is not limited to Crohn’s Disease, Ulcerative Colitis, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Cystic Fibrosis, arthritis, ALS, Multiple sclerosis, Fibromyalgia, cancers, neuropathy, and many others not mentioned here. As a nurse helping assist someone with pain, there are multiple helpful actions one could take that range from something as simple as repositioning a patient and giving them an ice pack to more complex actions such as applying a splint or treating with pain medications. Pain is subjective, meaning that it is perceived by the patient only and not evident to the examiner. So, when it comes to an individual exserting pain, the nurse should take into consideration what that individual is feeling and to assess appropriately by using a pain scale such as the Numerical Rating Pain Scale or the Wong-Baker Faces Pain Scale with consideration to age, level of consciousness and level of cognition. By helping an individual simply manage pain, the nurse can contribute to comfort and basic cares.
