How can any professional market themselves effectively without touting their accomplishments? Unfortunately, the answer is they cannot. For this reason, the advanced practice nurse (APN) must develop a professional portfolio. According to Burns (2018), a professional portfolio is proof of the nurse’s abilities, accomplishments, and professional experience. In addition, professional portfolios are a visual representation of the APN’s successes for prospective employers to review.
A strategy to include when compiling a professional portfolio is including a person’s academic history. By having these triumphs, the individual is demonstrating their commitment learn within their discipline (Casey and Egan, 2010). The listing of accreditations, licenses, diplomas, and certificates demonstrate competence by the APN. Competency is the proficiencies to practice safely and effectively without supervision (Casey and Egan, 2010). The individual completing the portfolio should include any achievements they have earned throughout their career. By listing achievements, the person is signifying their commitment to excellence beyond their assigned duties.
Devotion to social change is a crucial concept to include in a professional portfolio. Walden University (n.d.) defines social change as a commitment to “improving the human and social condition by creating and applying ideas to promote the development of individuals, communities, and organizations, as well as society as a whole.” Faithfulness to social change exhibits to prospective employers that you are not just dedicated to what you are being compensated for but, in fact, your allegiance to making a difference in the organization, community, and people’s lives no matter race, or religion, creed, or orientation. For example, a demonstration of dedication to social change is an active member in nursing organizations that promote social change, such as the American Nurses Association (ANA), American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA), or the American Academy of Nursing (AAN).
Professional portfolios are continually evolving as individuals obtain additional training, certificates, certifications, and jobs. Portfolios are a reminder of what our goals were and will be moving forward. They are a professional blueprint and assist in evaluating our progress. We must never forget where we were and where we are going. My goal is to provide evidence-based medical and mental health services to rural communities through the use of telehealth. I will achieve this goal by utilizing my current medical APN certification and the mental health APN certification I will obtain through Walden University.
