This buffer consists of bicarbonate ions and carbonic acid. The pancreas produces bicarbonate ions which are released into the blood. The carbonic acid is produced by the cells and is released into the blood.
When the blood pH becomes too acidic, the bicarbonate ions will bind to the hydrogen ions. This will increase the pH of the blood. Conversely, the carbonic acid will attach to the hydrogen ions when the blood pH becomes too alkaline. This will decrease the pH of the blood.
The body will become more acidic if this buffer is not effectively working. As a result, a person with this imbalance may experience increased fatigue, muscle weakness, and respiratory problems. This buffer imbalance can be treated with medications that increase the amount of bicarbonate in the blood.
