The Outdoor Environment: Outdoor Places
Outcome 4:
Places for Active Motor Play
Places for Swinging – Provide a variety of swinging materials so that children are able to experiment with time, motion and body control.
Places for Sliding & Rolling – Slides offer children many social interactions and physical challenges. Your environment should consist of hills for rolling.
Places for Climbing – “Anything that can be climbed will be climbed” (p.180). Provide a multitude of climbing experiences.
Places for Jumping – Be sure to provide different heights and an absorbent landing.
Places for Running – Wide-open spaces as well as pathways will encourage children to run.
Places for Throwing & Kicking – Provide a variety of balls for throwing/kicking to each other and at targets.
Places for Bouncing & Balancing – Experiment with a variety of surfaces.
Places for Traveling, Riding & Transporting – Provide clear pathways as well as an assortment of wheeled toys and wagons.
Places to Move Slowly – Perhaps through a garden or treed area.

Places to Be Human
Places to Watch, to Wonder, to Retreat – Quiet spaces need to be included to give children a calming break. Perhaps a bench under a tree.
Places to Eat – What about space to have snack or lunch outside periodically? Picnic tables or big blankets to spread on the ground.
Places to Discover – Don’t forget the natural outdoors. Take a nature walk. What do you see?

Creative & Constructive Play
Places for Building – Woodworking is a great choice for outdoor construction.
Places for Creative Expression – Children should have access to art materials in the outdoor environment as well as indoors. Sidewalk chalk, painting, and nature collages are some good activities.
Places to Pretend – Provide a playhouse and a variety of props for dramatic play.

Environmental Play
Places to Dig. Sand, dirt, and mud – Be sure that sand boxes are covered when not in use. They should be positioned near grassy areas rather than pavement.
Watery Places – Outdoor water tables, wading pools, sprinklers, and fountains will give children numerous opportunities to experience water in the outdoor environment.
Places for Growing – Vegetable gardens, flower gardens, herb gardens, trees, and shrubs. Gardens teach children about the seasons and the life cycle. They also add beauty to the outdoor environment.

A well-planned varied environment contributes to all aspects of children’s development. Ongoing observation and evaluation of the environment enables adults to modify the environment to ensure children’s needs are met. To enable children to freely play, be independent and have choices, adults need to be flexible and be willing to adapt the physical environment in response to children’s interests and learning styles.
