Recommendation for Practice ChangeÂ
The benefits of physical activity on osteoarthritis and other forms of arthritis are prevalent in the literature. Based on the literature review, recommendations for practice change include education, interprofessional collaboration, patient education with demonstrations, and regular counseling or check-ins with patients. Osteoarthritis specific training is recommended for nurses and has had success in randomized controlled trials (Polykarpos et al., 2021). In addition, safety should be considered regarding exercise form. Thus recommendations include interprofessional collaboration with a physical therapist(PT) or occupational therapist(OT). Exercises guided by a PT or OT have had positive results among patients whether self guided or in weekly sessions (Jönsson et al., 2019). Furthermore, recommendations include one on one education regarding the benefits of exercise and demonstrations of how to safely participate in physical activity. Education recommendations should include activities that the patient may not always be consistently compliant.
