The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) is an organization of the United States Federal government, and its role is “improving the safety and quality of healthcare for all Americans”(Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 2010). The group is responsible for creating quality of care related resources, tools, data, and education for patients, healthcare providers, and policymakers.
The organization is focused on researching ways in which to create safer environments of care for all US communities, but they have recently given special attention to supporting care, particularly primary care, in rural areas of the country. With increasing rates of mental health problems, substance abuse, and veterans’ healthcare challenges, the AHRQ has created specific projects related to these areas as well.
The AHRQ also creates resources for hospital settings, with a program called Re-Engineered Discharge, which are protocols and tools that assist hospitals with enhancing the discharge process, to make it safer and less likely for patients to be readmitted.
Another setting that is impacted by AHRQ’s work is the outpatient and provider practice setting, with the use of the Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Services (CAHPS), which is administered by the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS) as an essential part of value based care. These survey tools allow for meaningful feedback from patients/caregivers/families, and data derived from this process provides local, regional, and national information and benchmarks of patient experience and elements of care such as nurse communication, patient education, understand of medications, and safe care at home.
Data like this, and the benchmarks that are derived from them are extremely important an relevant to nurses, particularly nurse leaders. For example, data on in patient experience which is derived from the Inpatient CAHPS survey is directly tied to hospital reimbursement, and is used by numerous other healthcare agencies and organizations to indicate the quality of care as expressed by patient viewpoint. Nurse leaders in inpatient and outpatient settings are often directly responsibly for both understanding and planning for improvement in the patient experience and patient engagement, with “scores” that will track with evidence based improvement initiatives.
