Learning about the ethics of scientific research had numerous effects on me. It enables me to comprehend that research participants are humans and, as such, should be provided with a straightforward, easy-to-read explanation of the study, potential dangers, and anticipated benefits. In addition, participants may resign from the study before its end. Unfortunately, Henrietta Lacks’s (HELA) example was quite difficult to read, mainly because her daughter Deborah could not receive insurance coverage for the drugs her mother helped to create. HeLa cells have been used to develop cloning, gene mapping, and in vitro fertilization procedures, as well as to research the impact of countless viruses, medications, and diseases on human cells. Since the long-lived cells of Lacks may be grown forever, they have been popular in laboratories from the 1950s until the present (Shepherd, 2021). HeLa was not the only case; there were many others. Thankfully, there are now guidelines and regulations governing how research should be conducted. The Nuremberg Code (1947), the Helsinki Declaration (1964), and the Belmont Report (1974) contributed to the development of these ethical guidelines. Knowing what to look for while reading a study article gives me more confidence.

Interesting comments on HeLa cells. This was in the 1950s. Do you think it was not common practice then? I know several cell biopsies had been taken previously but Dr. Guy was not successful in these living and dividing until Henrietta’s sample. We can never underestimate the impact these cells have had on medical science. Do you think taking her additional cells changed her outcome at all? Was the first do not harm principle provided?
