How would you strengthen their disaster plan based on the role of the nurse. Provide feedback on any points needing improvement.

The RN will be prepared to triage patients. After patients are tagged, they will be transported to an area for treatment of major trauma, respiratory injury, and burns. Care may be delegated to others such as non-medical staff, students, or volunteers (Hinkle et al., 2022). Tasks that may be delegated to staff from other departments or students include assisting patients with decontamination and monitoring vital signs. Other non-medical staff can assist patients to bathe with soap and water. Custodial staff will already be trained to handle and dispose of items after decontamination. Students will be able to monitor vitals and report changes to the RN as it is within their skill level.  Volunteers may assist with providing, comfort measures and emotional support of the improbable survivors. Time may be limited so providing training and assessing skills of volunteers may not be possible. Providing comfort measures and emotional support is a basic skill level.  The RN will then be available for more complex tasks such as triaging the patients and providing supportive care. Supportive care may include administering blood, intravenous fluids and administering potassium iodide. Priority care will be provided for life-threatening injuries affecting ABC’s. Triage is ongoing and patients need frequent monitoring for any neurological changes or signs of deterioration. Any neurologic symptoms are signs of exposure to lethal doses of radiation (Hinkle et al., 2022). Following local policies for limiting exposure, contamination control and decontamination are among the priorities.
