A patient with newly diagnosed Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) who is in a situation where the primary language spoken by caregivers is other than that of the patient, is at a risk of adverse outcomes, and possibly even death. As morbidity from heart failure exacerbations can result from poor literacy as well as poor health literacy (Muncan, 2018), the onus is on the medical and nursing staff to ensure the patient’s language barrier needs are met.
To avoid the adverse outcomes of language barriers and conflicting beliefs and perspectives towards  culturally sensitive care, nurses should avoid making assumptions and judging patients with cultural differences. Nurses should be self-aware and in the state of Michigan as well as other states, there are required continued education offerings on implicit bias. Nurses can seek to self-educate on other cultures and help  awareness about culturally sensitive, patient-centered care. Additionally, caregivers can use language lines such as the AT&T language line (ATT), n.d.)or other entity which does not put the burden of translation on a family member or a staff member. This will, of course, be as to individual institutional policy.
What can you do to check bias at the door?, references
