“The U.S. is projected to experience a shortage of Registered Nurses (RNs) that is expected to intensify as Baby Boomers age and the need for health care grows.” (AACN, 2022). Aside from the increase in the number of retiring nurses, the nursing shortage is also caused by nursing school enrollment not growing fast enough to meet the demands of RN and APRN services, a nursing school faculty is also contributing to the shortage because only limited amount of students can be accepted in accredited programs which is not meeting the demand for nurses, changes in the population which is becoming more on the older population which will need geriatric care and more medical care due to chronic diseases and comorbidities is another factor, staff burnout specially due to the Covid-19 pandemic has contributed to staff retiring earlier than planned, and the increase need for a bachelor degree graduate nurse are preferred over associate degree nurses. Additional nursing shortage is also seen in rural hospitals which has always been a problem in attracting nurses to come work and stay in the area and some states like California, Texas, New Jersey, South Carolina, Alaska, Georgia, and South Dakota have difficulty retaining and replenishing their nurses. Some of the high demand specialty roles for nurses and nurse practitioners are Adult/Gerontology Primary care because of the increasing elderly population, Critical Care Nurse are needed for their qualifications to care for the very sick patients, Labor and Delivery Nurse or Certified Nurse Midwife another specialty that need special certification to care for normal and sick mothers during childbirth, Psychiatric Nurse or Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. Nursing shortage solutions should be addressed at its source. The first one is the need for qualified masters or doctoral prepared nurse educator will increase the enrollment of nursing students. This will help solve the nursing shortage because the school can accept more students into their program. The second solution is to expand access to education for current and aspiring nurses by providing scholarships and loan forgiveness to nursing students. The third solution is to be an advocate for fellow nurses regarding a healthier work environment for all. And the last solution is to commit to a new nursing career. Enrolling into a BSN, MSN, DNP, APRN/Post-Graduate, and Doctor of Philosophy can be part of the solution of the nursing shortage. How would your respond?
