When I used to work at North
When I used to work at North Texas State Hospital as a psychiatric nursing assistant, we had a patient admit to our unit who was in the beginning stages of dementia. He was confused and constantly pacing up and down the halls. He was so unpredictable and concerned for his safety he was placed on close observation, essentially a 1:1. This meant, we had to follow him everywhere he went. So if he was speed walking up and down the halls, so were we! One day, while I was sitting 1:1 with him, he mumbled something about the Beatles. I asked him to repeat what he said, but he didn’t. So I started playing a Beatles song on my phone. The song calmed him, it appeared that he became lucid at times and his speech was much clearer. He even started singing along. It was amazing to see how one song, created such a difference in the patient. Different types of therapies are utilized to help patients with neurocognitive disorders. What are your thoughts on the use of different therapies (music, art) in working with those diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or dementia?
