You are training a new coder, Elizabeth.

You are training a new coder, Elizabeth. She is a new graduate of the local health information management (HIM) program and just passed her registered health information technician (RHIT) exam last month. Elizabeth is a delight to work with and is anxious to learn everything she can. One of the things you have noticed in working with her is that she is having trouble using the coding references. Specifically, she does not understand how to use Coding Clinic for ICD-10-CM/PCS, Coding Clinic for Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS), the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) Assistant, and the official coding guidelines. The encoder has these resources built into the system, so the resources are readily available. She does know how to access and use the encoder but does not understand how Coding Clinic for ICD-10-CM/PCS, Coding Clinic for HCPCS, CPT Assistant, and other resources tie into the coding software. 1. What is Coding Clinic and CPT Assistant? Who publishes these resources? What are the differences between these two coding resources? How does one gain access to these resources? When would you use CPT Assistant? When would you use the Coding Clinic? What other training issues should you address with Elizabeth? Note: Discuss a minimum of three training issues that should be discussed with a new coder. Be sure to include references.
