One of my most significant and memorable
One of my most significant and memorable moments in life occurred during my final year of high school. It was difficult for me at the time to choose which post-secondary institution I wanted to attend. I made the choice to attend Mohawk College to study nursing. However, making this decision was a big adjustment for me because I lived in Brampton and now, I must move away from home to attend college. I felt like a bird leaving its nest when I made the decision to go away from home for college and away from my parents. Living on my own forced me to consider many elements of my life and to take responsibility for every action and choice I make. This has made me realize how much I needed to mature because when I live with my parents, they clean up after me. This big arrangement had taught me many aspects of myself and others. Even though the moving had its challenges at times, it served as a good method for me to develop. Through these experiences, I’ve learned time management skills and how to keep my spending in check so that I have money left over for necessities like food, rent, tuition, and other expenses. Throughout the semester, I have had the opportunity to interact with some wonderful people and learn a lot from them. They have also been incredibly encouraging and supporting to me when I have struggled in class. After this experience, I can say with certainty that I have changed for the better. I can still clearly recall that period of time in high school when I had to decide what I wanted to do with my life. Despite not knowing what I wanted to accomplish, I was confident that I wanted to aid people in their worst moments. In the end, I decided to studying nursing. This experience has changed me because it has taught me the value of making decisions and that it is acceptable to change your mind and take into account alternative viewpoints. I’ve definitely changed a lot since moving out. Becoming, for instance, more mature and self-assured. Overall, I’ve learned many skills from these experiences, like how to manage my time, make decisions, be independent, and money saving. Reflect on an experience in HealthCare Setting I had a positive experience when receiving medical attention when I was around 7 years old. When I shattered my arm this one time, I was transported to the hospital. I have always been afraid of hospitals and doctors since I was young. I was screaming and crying at the nurses. I was quite frightened. I was uncertain of what to anticipate and concerned that they would amputate my arm. At the hospital I visited, the nurses and physicians were really encouraging and helpful. They guided me through everything and put my mind at ease. I had a good impression of the event because the staffs was kind and attentive. The fact that the medical staff members were considerate and attentive made me feel good about the encounter. They paid attention to my worries and took action. At a young age I though both the hospital and the health care staff didn’t appeal to me. I believed that all nurses were cruel and that hospitals were unsettling environments. After this experience, I now have a more optimistic outlook on life and the people who work in the medical field. An unpleasant medical experience would be the day I took my father to the hospital because his ankle was so painful that he needed to go to the emergency room. After four hours of waiting in the patient room, the doctor eventually arrived, but he seemed rushed and only performed a quick checkup. After giving my dad and I a brief glance, he instructed us to wait in the room and then walks away. After another two hours of waiting, he finally arrived, gave my father some painkillers, and instructed us to go home and return the following day for a checkup. After this encounter I felt the doctor lack of concerns for my father and felt how disturbing the hospital environment was. I was angry about this situation, so I made the decision to talk to the doctor and nurses about my concern for my father and how much suffering he is in. The doctor was understanding and offered my dad a room for the night. Later, my father had blood testing and an x-ray performed by the nurse. Overall, both events show negative and positive side in healthcare. Reflect on what an ideal nurse looks like I believe the ideal nurses needs to be skilled in a lot of traits such as empathy, communication, critical thinking, a solid work ethic and a dedication to providing patients with high quality care. These characteristics enable the nurse to effectively interact with patients, recognize their needs, and deliver the highest quality of care. Nurses must have skilled communication and passionate in the healthcare setting. Nurses that have effective interpersonal abilities and can communicate clearly and directly with the team, patients, and family members (CNO, 2018). Nurse must be compassionate and a professional who can understand and empathize to patients’ situations (CNO, 2019). I believe that if I keep learning and developing my knowledge and abilities, I could make a great nurse and I would have to be able to give patients the finest care possible. The best nurses, in my opinion, are those that are constantly seeking to learn new things and advance their careers. I would need to keep learning and expanding my knowledge and abilities in order to reach the level of the perfect nurse. I think in order to be a good nurse I need to be excellent communicators in order to collaborate with other members of the healthcare team. Being effective under pressure is especially important for nurses because they constantly deal with demanding situations. I believe my own experience has had a positive impact on me and has helped me become more sensitive to the needs of others. Additionally, with my experience with my father I believe that have acquired qualities like understanding and patience is very essential for nurses. I have been through so much stressful moments in life, so I am aware how important it is for someone to care and show empathy. Although it might be unpleasant and difficult to communicate with others at times, I have learned to always be patient and have excellent communication skills, especially in the field of nursing. I believe that having these qualities will help me become a better nurse and enable me to enhance the lives of the patients I care for. Learning Goal (1) Based on the reflection and needs that you have identified in the life review, what is the learning goal? When defining the learning, goal consider the following: What specific area of your nursing education or nursing practice are you going to address with this goal? How are you hoping to enhance or improve your learning and competence in nursing? How will you benefit from these changes personally and professionally? When do you hope to see the results? Is your learning goal SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and timely)? Poor SMART goal: I want to be accepted into the RPN-BScN bridging program. Good SMART goal: By (specific date), I will complete the Practical Nursing Program at Mohawk College with a minimum average of 75%. In doing so, I will be able to apply to the collaborative RPN-BScN bridging program at Mohawk-McMaster and McMaster-Conestoga. Step 2: Identify how your learning goal aligns with the principles identified in the Code of Conduct from the College of Nurses of Ontario. Learning Activities (3) Step 4: Identify three (3) specific learning activities you plan to complete to address your learning goal and provide a timeline on when you intend to complete your activities. When describing your learning activities, consider the following: How are you going to achieve your learning goal? What resources will you be using to undertake this learning? How, when, and where do you learn best? Which learning domains (cognitive, psychomotor, affective) are related to your learning activities? What might hinder the completion of this learning activity? How will you overcome these barriers? SCIENCE HEALTH SCIENCE NURSING NRSG 10065
