The health policy I chose was HR 7666- Restoring Hope for Mental Health and Well Being Act 2022. This bill passed The House 6/22/2022. This policy expands and modifies programs, grants, activities that focus on mental and behavioral health (Congress, n .d.). This health policy addresses many health concerns related to mental illness. Additionally, the bill expands access to opioid and other substance use disorder prevention, treatment, and recovery support services. For example, the bill (1) eliminates a provision that generally requires individuals to be addicted to opioids for at least a year before being admitted to an opioid treatment program, and (2) promotes access to high-quality recovery housing(Congress, n.d.). Other areas of interest within the policy include:maternal mental health, substance abuse ,eating disorders and integrating behavioral health services in primary care settings.
I find eating disorders an interesting topic when related to mental heath issues. When we talk about mental illness we think of disorders like bipolar, schizophrenia and substance abuse. Not much focus is placed on the issue of eating disorders. The effects of eating disorders are serious and comprise a dangerous mix of psychological and physical impairments, fatal medical complications, and some of the highest rates of suicide and mortality across mental health, leading to a reduction in life expectancy of between 8 and 23 years (Worsfold & Sheffield, 2018). Not alot is understood about eating disorders and typically these disorders are not diagnosed appropriately. These disorders can be diagnosed as anxiety or depression. It is unsurprising that many individuals with eating disorders are then going undetected, untreated, or even mistreated by practitioners with popular “health” treatments often centering on the very factors maintaining their disorders given the common focus on restrictive dieting, “healthism”, and promotion of highly valuing weight and/or particular body shapes(Worsfold, Sheffield, 2018).
Eating disorders seem to be a growing mental health issue. A local family APNP discussed the growing need for services related to eating disorders. The barriers consists of lack of education or providers specializing in this area.Despite eating disorders having high economic morbidity and one of the highest mortality rates of all psychiatric conditions, with prevalence rates increasing markedly and with these individuals using health services more than other patient groups, practitioners receive very little undergraduate training in such conditions and subsequently have comparatively low literacy (Worsfold.Sheffield,2018).
There are many aspects to consider when evaluating policy. These include evaluating whether the policy was implemented as intended, effects of the implementation and identifying challenges and barriers (CDC, n.d. ). Identifying strengths and weakness within the policy can improve the overall services provided to patients. Addidtional education may be neccessary for providers to obtain when dealing with certain mental health issues.
