Today we watched the disturbing documentary “Trophy Kids”. By definition, a trophy kid is a gifted child whose parents parade him/ her around to impress others and enhance the parents’ status among their peers.Â
• Which, or if any, of the children in this documentary meet the definition of a “trophy kid”?Â
• At what age, do you think, a child should be able to “specialize” in one sport?Â
• What are your thoughts on the amount of parental pressure that the children in this film are enduring?Â
• What short term and long term effects can you identify? Give examples from the film if possible.Â
• What lessons are being taught to the children by observing their parents’ behaviors and attitudes?Â
• As a pediatric nurse, how would you handle a situation where one of these children wanted to quit their sport but was afraid of damaging their relationship with their parent- either from fear of retaliation by their parent or the loss of attention from the parent?Â
• Remember in cases of emotional neglect, some children may prefer negative attention from a parent rather than a total lack of attention.Â
• Are any of these parents, in your mind, demonstrating abusive behavior with their child?Â
• Do you think that children are at risk for exploitation and abuse through competitive sports? What about Olympic athletes?Â
• There are so many benefits to children being involved in sports- with everything you have seen today from this documentary and the current mentality in our society regarding competitive sports-do the benefits still outweigh the risks?
