What is your understanding of board governance

What is your understanding of board governance within the context of strategic planning? “Governance can be defined as: “The system by which entities are directed and controlled. It is concerned with structure and processes for decision making, accountability, control and behavior at the top of an entity. Governance influences how an organization’s objectives are set and achieved, how risk is monitored and addressed and how performance is optimized”. Governance is a system and process, not a single activity and therefore successful implementation of a good governance strategy requires a systematic approach that incorporates strategic planning, risk management and performance management. Like culture, it is a core component of the unique characteristics of a successful organization” (Governace). What is your understanding of organizational leadership within the context of strategic planning? “Organizational leadership is the ability to lead groups of individuals toward fulfilling an organization’s mission. It encompasses the following skills: understanding an organization’s mission, in alignment with one’s strengths, creating a strategic plan in line with that mission, and Implementing goals and holding teams accountable for accomplishing those goals within an established timeline, and in alignment with the strategic plan. Organizational leadership encompasses a broader scope of responsibility than traditional management. Organizational leadership communicates the mission and vision, establishes the strategic plan, and inspires individuals to put forth their talents to fulfill the goals aligned with the strategic plan and, ultimately, the leader’s vision. Organizational leadership is important because it: motivates team members, allows for a problem-solving and decision-making mindset, promotes communication, ethics, inclusion, and respect, allows organizational leaders to remain goal-oriented” (Organizational leadership). What are the differences between leadership and board governance in establishing strategic planning for a health care organization? From my understanding, leadership is founded on the abilities of the people in positions of authority who use workable plans to enhance outcomes within the organization. The major goal of the board’s governance is to assign duties and responsibilities. Unlike leadership, which is primarily based on the ability to steer people, governance is the process of putting authority into action. To ensure that every member is responsible for their activities and to provide efficient oversight, governance centers on the system architecture and places a strong emphasis on strategic policies inside the business. Are both needed and necessary? After researching and reading different articles and definitions, I believe both leadership and board governance are necessary. They both are needed to help carry out a strategic plan within an organization successfully. How do these two leadership structures work together to execute a strategic plan? The WHO building blocks of a health system states that governance and leadership includes “ensuring strategic policy frameworks exist and are combined with effective oversight, coalition-building, regulation, attention to system-design, and accountability” (Goverance & Leadership.
